Navigating Parenthood and Career Growth at Fonterra

People are at the heart of Fonterra’s success, which is why they prioritize offering a wide range of employee benefits, including true flexible working arrangements. They understand the importance of balancing work and home life, and they’re committed to supporting our employees and their families. Their goal is to create a work environment that fosters engagement and productivity through flexible and inclusive practices, without compromising efficiency.

Meet Steph Harris, who not only navigated career growth but also embraced parenthood along the way.

Current Role and Career Path:

In December 2019, Steph started her role as a Farm Relationships Team Lead at the Farm Source Service Centre. She first managed six team members who were focused on helping farmer shareholders, but her career progressed organically. She then led a team of thirty before moving to the Talent Acquisition Team in September 2023, showing flexibility and development.

Passion and Team Dynamics:

She is most energized by her role because of the variety of tasks and the harmony among her outstanding team. The cooperative spirit, inspired by the co-operatives long-term goals, leads them to pursue exciting opportunities for talent acquisition for the co-operative.

Parenthood and Professional Support:

Steph returned from parental leave in June 2023 after her second baby was born. Steph experienced great support from her manager and the Co-op. Throughout her time on parental leave, her manager maintained frequent communication, ensuring she remained connected to the pulse of the business and their teams. Embracing the concept of “keeping in touch” days, she seized the opportunity to participate in engaging team activities and provide support to Farm Source’s Agribusiness graduates, seamlessly blending her professional and personal worlds.

Furthermore, the Co-op’s commitment to flexibility was evident as she transitioned back to work. With the option to gradually increase her hours from part-time to full-time, she could tailor her return to align with her child’s daycare schedule, easing the transition for both herself and her little one. This accommodating approach not only demonstrated the Co-op’s understanding of the challenges faced by working parents but also underscored their dedication to fostering a supportive and inclusive workplace environment

“In my experience, I've found that support, flexibility, and a strong community make a big difference at work. At Fonterra, it isn't just about having a job; it is a bit like being part of a caring family. We do our best to look out for each other and support each other’s success."
